British Red Cross Produces Teaching Resource on Japan Tsunami Disaster
Tuesday 22nd March 2011
In the wake of last week’s catastrophic Japanese tsunami, the British Red Cross has produced teachers’ lesson plans focussing on the disaster. Teachers who sign up to the charity’s free online newsthink service can download assembly and classroom video-based lesson plans focussing on the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Karen Gravell, the British Red Cross humanitarian education officer said:
“We are continually working to offer topical teaching resources to help teachers explore humanitarian issues and develop life saving skills with students.
“Our latest newsthink provides background information, a video clip and structured activities to help students explore their thoughts on the disaster and better understand how the Japanese people are feeling and coping.”
Newsthink lesson plans look at the stories behind recent news headlines, and provide teachers with activities, videos, photo and discussion triggers. They’re good in informal education as well as for assemblies, tutor time, and to keep any subject lessons current.
Teachers can sign up for free to newsthink at the Red Cross website to receive topical fortnightly news-based activities covering subject matter such as Japan, Libya and Haiti.
