Take Part in Spellathon 2012 and Develop Pupils’ Spelling Whilst Raising Money For Charity!

Posted by on Wednesday 25 January 2012 in &

Spellathon will be the first ever Global English Language Digital Spellathon Championship. The event starts early in 2012 and offers a great opportunity for primary and secondary schools to promote spelling  and raise the profile of this aspect of the English curriculum. Spellathon as an event also involves raising funds for Mencap as pupils can seek sponsorship for the number of words they spell correctly during the championships in March 2012- so now is the time to get signed up and start to practise spelling.

Stephen Fry is involved with Spellathon 2012 and materials on the website are introduced by him, Fry voices the character of ‘The Professor’ used in Spellathon. Teachers will find a free video that can be used to introduce the event during an assembly along with free interactive whiteboard resources.

A free digital pack is available for schools from the website. An excellent feature of the resources is that these are differentiated by year group, ability and have been intended to support the National Curriculum.

The Spellathon Championships will happen during the period of 5th March to 11th March 2012. All of this will occur online. Pupils simply need to log into the website and play a game. Those taking part can also qualify to compete live against Stephen Fry in a Reverse Spellathon Challenge! They need to have raised over £15 of sponsorship and spell fifty words in reverse whilst playing the online games by the 1st February 2012. According to the website, successful participants will be notified of their place in playing against Stephen Fry.
