Teachers Need More Free Teaching Resources

Thursday 24th February 2011

According to a recently published survey of US teachers, more and more teachers are buying their own teaching resources due to squeezed school budget. Teachers reported spending 60% of their time using educational resources in the classroom that are either free, or paid for by the teachers themselves. More than half of secondary school teachers (62%) say they frequently use digital media in classroom instruction although forty-six percent of teachers said cost was the main barrier to using fee-based digital resources, and 33% cited time constraints

Although iPads and eReader’s are all the rage at the moment, teachers are still voting for the interactive whiteboards as the most valuable classroom technology. iPads and readers are considered to be the second most valuable resource, behind laptops in the classroom too.

Schools, trainers and teachers are using a lot more internet-based technology in the classroom and the survey (conducted in the US) also reveals that low school budgets are forcing teachers to look for more free teaching resources. The number of teachers in the US who either find free resources (35%) or purchase resources with their own money (25%) is increasingly common.

Teachers are using digital and online resources more than ever, and that teachers are using more of their own money and time to find effective digital teaching resources.
