World Smile Day is this Friday October 7th

Thursday 6th October 2011

On the first Friday of October people all over the world will be celebrating World Smile Day – the brainchild of Harvey Ball, the American graphic designer, creator of the world famous round, bright yellow, smiley face icon. Invented by Harvey Ball in 1963 for an advertising company create a happy face to be used on buttons, the smiley face image has gone on to become the most recognizable symbol of happiness and good will on the planet, as well as in technology using ASCII Art.

As the smiley symbol became used more and more around the world in many different contexts, Harvey Ball decided that the original idea behind the symbol was becoming lost, and wanted to encourage people to devote one day every year to smiling at each other and being kind. He decided that the first Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day. Ever since 1999 it has continued every year in the hometown of Worcester, MA and around the world. The Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was established in 2001 to honour the name and memory of Harvey Ball.
