Teachers may well be able to use these materials to support elements of the Business Studies course, particularly if they are prepared to select and amend the activities provided. They could be used as part of a group research activity where different groups of students are allocated different topics linked to charities or marketing. One group (preferably with a particular interest in animal welfare) could be allocated the Dogs Trust materials, while other groups study different charities (or products/services, if it is a marketing exercise.)
The materials cover a range of topics relevant to the GCSE Business Studies syllabus including:
There are real examples of press advertisements and radio scripts for students to evaluate and real financial data on income and expenditure. The materials are particularly useful for highlighting the similarities and differences between charities and profit making businesses, and for looking at the effectiveness of different advertising media and methods. To get the most from the materials students would need to be familiar with basic business concepts first, and have an interest in animal welfare.
