Activities to Support Teaching Science at Key Stage 2
As part of the National Curriculum for Science at Key Stage 2, children learn about changes of state. This includes exploring solid, liquids and gases. Children identify the differences between them and the properties of each state of matter. They find out how states can changed through processes of heating, cooling, evaporating and condensing. Mixtures of materials and their separation are also covered in the programme of study with children using their knowledge of the properties of solids and liquids to separate them in an appropriate way.
This website provides a useful resource to support teaching and learning about states of matter. It includes a series of animations that demonstrate properties of solids, liquids and gases. These can be paused and rewound meaning that it is a useful way of introducing ideas or reinforcing them as part of whole-class teaching.
There are also information sheets and activities that can be used when teaching about solids, liquids and gases. These worksheets and activities relate to children developing subject-knowledge as well as skills in scientific enquiry.
