Exploring The Theme Of Conflict Using Lesson Plans for ‘The Crucible’ Provided By Stagework
This resource bases work around Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’. Pupils explore the idea of witches and witchcraft. They then consider the concept of a ‘witch hunt’. Other aspects of the teaching session involve pupils in exploring the text in performance, considering staging choices and decisions a director may make. They can contrast interpretations of the text and devise an additional scene, which leads to a script and performance.Initial work orientates pupils to the social and historical context by exploring myths and legends to develop understanding of superstitions and views held by people at the time. The teaching sequence and materials, including worksheets, are provided in a Word document version so that these can be adapted to suit the needs of the teacher and their pupils. There are also extension ideas provided for activities to support teachers in challenging pupils further. For example, developing a scripted scene into a media production for radio or as a filmed work
