Learning and Teaching Resources
Heritage Open Days provides a teachers pack containing ideas for visits to sites and to support work in the classroom. The pack contains advice on arranging a visit to a heritage site. It provides easy to follow steps to guide the planning process. This covers deciding on a site, the learning intentions and cross-curricular links.
Advice for Teachers on Visits
A section is devoted to providing teachers with advice on how to make the most of a visit to a historic site. It offers tips on preparing bespoke worksheets with a particular focus on engaging children be encouraging them to observe and think. A bank of ideas for class-based work are also provided, which can be adapted depending on the focus of the visit and historic period being studied.
Supporting the History Programme
The ideas in this pack support the History programme of study set out in the National Curriculum as it highlights the use of different sources to find out about the past as well as encouraging teachers to consider activities through which children can communicate their own learning about the past.
