The Northumberland Grid for Learning provides a range of resources to support teaching and learning in Music for children in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. ‘Sounds From Space’ is an interactive resource for Key Stage 1 containing a story and songs. It provides opportunities for compositional activities with children creating their own sounds from space. There are also activities provided for teachers to develop children’s sense of rhythm as the basis of their composition.
Virtual Orchestra
The Virtual Orchestra enables children to hear sixty different instruments being played. This is a great resource for children learning about the names of different instruments and the sound. This covers brass, string, percussion and wind instruments. There are additional resources, such as quizzes, to help children learn the names of instruments and what they sound like. The materials on the website are useful in developing children’s listening skills, appreciation of different sounds made by instruments as well as an ability to discriminate between these.
