Use Rubistar To Support Creating Specifications For Projects To Support Teacher Assessment And Children’s Self-Assessment

This is a good tool for teachers who wish to easily create a rubric, or a series of statements relating to expectations of quality, that can be used to support assessment of children’s work or act as a guide for children to engage in self-assessment of their performance and identify how it could be improved.

This fits well into the National Curriculum Design Technology programme of study where children consider specifications and develop their ability to evaluate their own products and those of others. The website can help create rubrics for making simple products, such as games, maps and posters. Other areas covered include the design and making of a musical instrument, collaborative working skills and making masks or creating pieces of work that involve multimedia and the use of ICT.

The rubrics are created easily via a series of drop-down menus that cover different criteria required in relation to specific projects. These can be easily modified manually if desired. This tool may be more suitable for Upper Key Stage 2 children and in providing challenge to children who may be identified as Gifted and Talented in Design Technology.
