Enterprise forms part of the Economic Well-Being and Financial Capability curriculum. It aims to help motivate pupils to make progress by enabling them to see the relevance of school-based learning to their future lives in employment and the world of work. Pupils learn to be enterprising meaning that they handle uncertainty, respond to change and put new ways of doing things into practice. They learn to make risk and reward assessments, the drive to make ideas happen and a positive attitude that they can achieve their aims.
In this area of the KS3 curriculum, pupils develop their capability to manage money and finances. They make creative and realistic plans, learning from mistakes made when a risk is taken.
Enterprise can have a positive impact on pupils’ self-development as they come to not only identify qualities and skills needed in the world of work, but how to apply these. This area of the curriculum requires individuals to work together with others in problem-solving and formulating action plans.
This section provides lesson plans for promoting an enterprising approach amongst pupils. There are resources to introduce pupils to innovation and creativity. For example, the Patent Office materials on intellectual property using case studies to consider trademarks, and copyright. E4A Education highlights possible enterprise challenges that can be used as inspiration for planning enrichment days or challenges.
