Free Geography KS1 Teaching Resources for Primary Resources

Learning about Geography at KS1

During Key Stage 1, children learn about their local area and a contrasting place in the UK looking at the environment and people living in those places. They ask geographical questions about people and places, using maps and photographs to develop their enquiry skills.

In KS 1 Geography, children describe what places are like and where they are. They observe where things are located. As part of developing geographical skills, children record information on plans or maps. They also make their own maps and plans. Children use secondary sources to find information about localities; these may include videos, stories, information texts and the internet.

Children also learn about changes in the environment and how the environment can be improved. This provides good links with aspects of the Citizenship curriculum. Countryside Access provides resources that talks about the environment and how it should be treat by people. It contains a pdf version of the Countryside Code which can be simplified for KS1 Geography students.

The materials in this section can be used to enhance current schemes of work in KS1 Geography. There are audiovisual resources that can be used to bring learning about the world around us to life within the classroom. These materials include tools, images, videos, information and games which are all engaging for both teachers and pupils.

Google Earth is the perfect tool for Geography classrooms. Type in a destination and this site will take you there. With satellite, road map and eye-level views, places are shown (saying what country they are in, what is near them and also how to get there). When teaching about different weather types and climates, this tool can show pupils what they are like and where in the world they are, such as the deserts in Africa and the rainforests in South America.
