During Key Stage 1, children learn about their local area and a contrasting place in the UK looking at the environment and people living in those places. They ask geographical questions about people and places, using maps and photographs to develop their enquiry skills.

In KS 1 Geography, children describe what places are like and where they are. They observe where things are located. As part of developing geographical skills, children record information on plans or maps. They also make their own maps and plans. Children at Key Stage 1 use secondary sources to find information about localities, These may include videos, stories, information texts and the internet.

Children also learn about changes in the environment and how the environment can be improved. This provides good links with aspects of the Citizenship curriculum.

The materials in this section can be used to enhance current schemes of work in Key Stage 1 Geography. There are audiovisual resources that can be used to bring learning about the world around us to life within the classroom.
