Pupils studying Geography at Key Stage 4 will be working towards a GCSE in the subject. As a result, different examination boards provide differing specifications for what should be included in the curriculum. They provide different options for topics that can be selected for pupils to study.
Physical geography covers areas such as earthquakes and volcanoes, weather and climate and ecosystems. Pupils may study rivers, glaciers and coastal areas. Human geography can cover topics related to population change, changes in urban environments or rural settings. Tourism, rich and poor countries and globalisation may also be taught. As part of assessment, pupils are expected to carry out a fieldwork investigation where geographical skills are used to answer a question and develop their line of enquiry. Some specifications also expect pupils to complete an investigation into an environmental issue.
Materials in this section provide ideas for planning and resourcing Geography at Key Stage 4. They can be used to supplement a current schemes of work.
