In Key Stage 2, children use the number system more confidently. They move from counting reliably to calculating using all four number operations. Children develop mental calculation strategies and are taught to decide when they may need to select another method. At Key Stage 2, methods and reasoning are explained using a wider range of mathematical vocabulary and children develop ways of organising their work sensibly and clearly.
Throughout KS 2, children learn to solve problems with one, two or more steps. These can involve fractions, decimals and percentages as they progress towards Year 6. They consolidate their knowledge of number facts involving all four operations and use what they know to derive linked facts. Using knowledge and understanding of place value, children multiply whole numbers by 10, 100 and 1000, This extends into working with decimals. Children develop written methods for all four number operations.
In Key Stage 2, children are expected to describe shapes according to a wider range of properties. They build on prior learning about turns when looking at angles. Children use standard measures for length, weight and capacity. In working with data, they construct, read and interpret a range of graphs.
The resources in this section can be used to support teaching children in Key Stage 2 to ensure they engage in a range of activities to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding.
Pupils start to work with fractions, percentages, ration and decimals, building the foundations of their mathematical understanding. Any resources used at this key stage need to be clear and fun, with real life links that can make the topic more relevant for young people, including the use of ICT resources. The free maths resources available include many online interactive games and activities, designed for use either on a whiteboard or on an individual PC. This type of activity is particularly suitable for the topic ’Shape, space and measures ’, when the ability to manipulate shapes on the screen really helps pupils visualise the task in hand.
