Free English KS2 Teaching Resources for Primary Teachers

Resources for KS2 English

Bored of the same old textbooks, worksheets and approaches to texts? Variety is the spice of life, and on this page you will find some great free teaching resources for key stage two English. You may think that some of them initially look irrelevant for your lesson planning, or your pupil’s requirements, but take a quick look if you can at them, and you may be pleasantly surprised by how useful they are, particularly if you are interested in linking literacy with another curriculum area such as PSHE or citizenship. KS2 English is about so much more than spelling, grammar and punctuation after all - you will find that the resources listed on this page help with comprehension and early reading skills, as well as being stimulating starter activities for group discussions.

Primary Literacy

As the literacy programme of study becomes more challenging throughout key stage 2, pupils need to improve handwriting skills, develop effective strategies for spelling and reading, expand their vocabulary and learn how to take part in well managed group discussions, where they focus, listen and take their turn. The texts they will be using include more challenging examples of modern fiction, poetry and myths and legends. The resources on this page contain some great examples of non-fiction case studies and articles and tasks around them. They are also great ways to show how literacy plays such an important role in our lives, including through understanding texts, comprehension and being able to contextualise language.

Shakespeare at Key Stage Two

If you are looking for resources to help with teaching Shakespeare at KS2, including Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet, then you will find some great sources of free video clips and play materials on some of the websites on this page. Use them to introduce plots and characters, as group discussion points or starters to your lessons. Shakespeare is such an incredibly rich source of language and ideas;, the plays can seem overwhelming, but with expert guidance and support in the free lesson plans and worksheets on this page, you can be confident that your pupils will be getting the most out of your literacy classes.

What Happens in KS2 English

During Key Stage 2, children learn to adapt the way they talk and write to suit different audiences and purposes. They read a range of texts, which includes narrative, non-fiction and poetry. Children learn to read between the lines, identify the use of language in literary and non-literary works. In Speaking and Listening, children at Key Stage 2 take varied roles in groups. They learn how to respond to others and think about what is said to make contributions and develop their ideas.

Children read a range of material as part of the Reading attainment target. They continue to develop strategies such as the use of phonic knowledge, knowledge of grammar and understanding words and sentences in their context. Children make more complex inferences and deductions. In Key Stage 2, children develop their skills of scanning, skimming and close reading.

In Writing at KS2, children learn the rules and conventions of written English. Children learn to create more complex sentences and use a wider range of punctuation to demarcate these. They plan, draft and edit their written work when producing fiction and non-fiction texts. Children learn to use spelling strategies and develop their understanding of morphology and how suffixes and prefixes can alter the meaning of words.
