Modern Foreign Languages at GCSE Level

At Key Stage 4, pupils studying a language are working towards a GCSE. Different examination boards produce different specifications and these will influence the curriculum followed in Key Stage 4. Also the examination boards offer different languages to learn so it is up to the school which ones they would like to teach.

Generally, specifications seek to develop knowledge of language and the skills needed in order to learn it. Pupils are required to understand language and communicate in different contexts. They also become aware of the countries and communities in which the language they are learning is spoken.

Pupils listen and respond to oral language. They must be able to read and respond to written text. Pupils also communicate in writing, which requires them to apply the grammar of the language they are learning. Specifications for MFL at Key Stage 4 emphasise the knowledge and understanding of grammar that pupils must be taught and use during their course.

For most exam-boards, MFL will be tested in: reading, speaking, writing and listening. Each examination will cover various topics that the pupils will have learned over the past years.
