At Key Stage 4, pupils studying a language are working towards a GCSE. Different examination boards produce different specifications and these will influence the curriculum followed in Key Stage 4.
Generally, specifications seek to develop knowledge of language and the skills needed in order to learn it. Pupils are required to understand language and communicate in different contexts. They also become aware of the countries and communities in which the language they are learning is spoken.
Pupils listen and respond to oral language. They must be able to read and respond to written text. Pupils also communicate in writing, which requires them to apply the grammar of the language they are learning. Specifications for MFL at Key Stage 4 emphasise the knowledge and understanding of grammar that pupils must be taught and use during their course.
