During Key Stage 2, children learn about a wider range of living things and materials. They apply their knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas to everyday contexts. Children carry out investigations on their own and with others. They communicate their understanding and findings using scientific vocabulary and diagrams, charts and graphs.

In Key Stage 2 Science, children identify life processes common to humans and animals as well as those that apply to plants. They learn about nutrition, circulation, movement, growth and reproduction health. Children group and classify materials, considering thermal insulators, electrical conductors and the difference between solids, liquids and gases. They learn about reversible and irreversible changes, including processes such as burning, cooling, evaporation and condensing. Children learn about separating mixtures of materials and the processes of sieving, dissolving, filtering and evaporation. They develop their knowledge and understanding of circuits, forces, light and sound.

In Key Stage 2, children are taught about the Earth, sun and moon. They learn how day and night occur and about length of orbits.

The materials in section provide lesson plans and resources that be used to support teaching and learning in Key Stage 2 Science in different areas of the programme of study.  They can be incorporated into current schemes of work to provide variety and interest.
