What Pupils Learn in KS3 Science
Science at Key Stage 3 links scientific ideas and practical activities. Pupils learn how scientific knowledge and understanding is based on evidence. They consider how scientific work contributes to industry, medicine and improving people’s quality of life.
During Key Stage 3 Science, pupils study energy, electricity and forces. This includes how energy can be transferred and stored. They learn that electric currents in circuits can produce magnetic and heating effects as well as chemical changes. Pupils find out how the interaction of forces can affect shape and motion of objects. They learn about life processes and how these are supported by the organisation of cells in the body into systems. Pupils consider variation in organisms and classification. As part of Key Stage 3 Science, pupils learn about the Earth in terms of the chemical and physical processes that cause geological activity. They learn about astronomy and what information scientific enquiry has provided on the nature and movement of the sun, moon, stars and planets.
The British National Space Centre
The British National Space Centre link in this section provides activities to support pupils learning about space at Key Stage 3, which is particularly useful in meeting the curricular requirements. There are interactive activities that can be incorporated into lessons as well as other planning and resources that can support teaching and learning in different areas of Key Stage 3 Science inside and outside of the classroom.
Materials and Resources
Science at KS3 splits up into three areas: Physics, Biology and Chemistry. Materials and resources found in the websites shown on this page will help teaching each area and the topics that they cover.
Curriculum Bits for Science has a bank of resources in each area; using games, text, videos and images to teach. Quizzes are also present, which can help when pupils are revising for end of topic tests and practice for when they move onto GCSE level.
